2018 Paddle Canada Courses

This is the primary starting point of the Paddle Canada Sea Kayak skills progression. With a focus on foundation skills and knowledge, Basic Kayak Skills inspires students to go out on short paddling excursions in calm and sheltered waters.

Equipment: Boats and equipment is provided.

Building on the information covered in Basic Skills (Not required if you have paddled before), Level-1 is a two-day course that moves participants beyond flatwater kayaking and into the sport of sea kayaking. The course is conducted in slightly rougher water than Basic Kayak, aiming to develop the paddler’s comfort in class-1 waters. There is a strong focus on re-entry techniques as well as the skills required to safely plan and execute a day trip with friends (for example, navigation & route planning, weather interpretation, proper clothing/gear.)

Location & Time:

  • Day 1 Trailhead Demo Center, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm
  • Day 2 Shirleys Bay Park, 8:00 am – 2:00pm

Equipment: Participants must provide their own boats and equipment. Boats must have 2 sealed bulkheads.

Prerequisites:

  • Paddle Canada Basic Kayak skills certification or equivalent skill and knowledge at the discretion of the course director.

OR

  • Five kayaking excursions (2 or 3 hours) in class-0
  • Can execute a controlled wet exit in class-0 conditions.
  • Can perform a simple assisted re-entry in class-0 conditions.

This 2-hour clinic introduces the basic mechanics involved in rolling a kayak leading to the ability to roll a kayak confidently in calm conditions.

Prerequisites

It is highly recommended that students have Basic Kayak Skills certification or equivalent skill and knowledge. Students must be able to perform a controlled and calm wet exit.

Winter Course Examples

Please join us for a a free XC ski waxing clinic with Swix and Fischer representative Bryan Ayler.

In this 1 hours clinic, Bryan will be focusing on classic ski waxing (base cleaning, base prep, grip waxing, glide waxing) but will also be touching base on skate ski waxing method.
